Coming Home JDR Powell 1945

This is a tribute J.D.R Powell.  The film is taken from selected scenes of The World at War series (Reckoning).

Joe Powell was held as a POW by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945 in Singapore, Java, Timor, Borneo and other Indonesian islands.

Like others from this terrible time he rarely spoke of his ordeal.

He returned to the UK in May 1945 and is seen here being met by his Mother and Sister at Southampton Docks.

He married Ruth in Germany while serving with the RAF and had three children Eva, Lizzie and Joesph.

He worked in Fleet Street and lived in Brighton and Peacehaven.
